KNIVES, SLEDS & CUSTOM BOWS

In establishing a gear review section on here, I became immediately aware of the fact that actually having new gear to review is sort of a necessary component. Well, I’ve been fortunate enough to have a some very cool items come my way recently, which I will be writing about in the next few weeks. Here’s a brief preview:

The first two opportunities came through Rebecca and Joe over at the Outdoor Blogger Network via their well-built (and growing) gear review program.

This just in...

The first is the SOG Aura Hunting knife, which I just received in the mail today. There’s a couple weeks of archery and muzzleloader season left and I’ve got a couple tags left to fill. With any luck (and a W/SW wind) I’ll be putting this impressive knife through it’s paces.

Getting the dekes off my back

The second is the Jet Sled from Shappell. The snow is flying and late goose season opens Christmas weekend. In the absence of an ATV and trailer, I’ve humped enough decoy bags into the field to appreciate the benefit of a quality hunting sled. And it’s in camo, no less. Win, win.

Nothing but wood goodness

And finally, I’ll be spending some time at the archery range with a selection of BlackWidow custom recurves, and possibly a longbow. Thanks to my friend Grant Taylor, who is very well-liked by the folks at BW, we get to practice some instinctive shooting with these gorgeous, wood-works of art.

Looking forward to some quality time with some quality gear. Stay tuned.

Very cool Matt. Looking forward to hearing about them all. On a side note, it’s very nice to know that you’re a stickbow shooter as well. The bug bit me a couple years ago and I really enjoy shooting my Fox Breed. I am excited to see how your shoot with Black Widow goes. Good luck.

Thanks! I’m actually just starting the recurve/longbow journey. My dad had an old Fred Bear recurve when I was little that I was fascinated with, but never shot. By the time I was old enough, it had twisted enough to be un-shootable. I get a chance now though!

    Very Cool Matt!
I look forward to reading all about your experiences and I’m glad we could help fill up your gear section. I can’t wait until the weather gets better, we’ve got some incredible fly fishing items coming everyones way as well that (as you could guess) I’m dying to offer up on the OBN.
I’ve never tried a longbow, but love the idea of it. I hope you love it!

Yes, you guys most definitely rock over there at OBN, and in general too, of course 🙂 Very excited to see what sort of fly fishing gear is on the horizon…

As for the longbow…we’ll see if I wind up channeling my inner Tred Barta…

Curious to continue hearing about your stickbow evolution, Matt. I just got my hands on a Bear Montana longbow that I’m looking forward to spending lots of time with. I have a feeling it’s going to quickly become my favorite way to spend time in the woods.

I’ll actually be at the range this evening for my introduction. Very much looking forward to it. I’ll keep you posted.
Hoping I’m not so sore in the morning I can’t get out for geese!
      Thanks for the shout.
